신의 이름으로 포장한 전쟁 매뉴얼 신명기 20장

느닷없이 전쟁 얘기를 왜 하는지 모르겠지만 전쟁을 두려워하지 말라는 내용이 나오는 신명기 20장입니다. 하나님이 선택한 그 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 그냥 주시는 게 아니라 침략과 전쟁으로 뺏으라는 것 같은데요. 여러모로 합리화와 가스라이팅의 콜라보 북이 성경이 아닌가 합니다.

전쟁을 두려워 마라

1. "When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. 2 And when you draw near to the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people 3 and shall say to them, 'Hear, O Israel, today you are drawing near for battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint. Do not fear or panic or be in dread of them, 4 for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.'

 

 

상대 진영이 많고 강해 보여도 전쟁을 두려워하지 말라고 합니다. 제사장이 나와서 군사들에게 하나님께서 싸우신다고 선포한다는데요. 믿는 대로 이루어지는 것 같습니다.

 

연줄 있는 사람은 전쟁에 안 나가도 된다.

 

5 Then the officers shall speak to the people, saying, 'Is there any man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it. 6 And is there any man who has planted a vineyard and has not enjoyed its fruit? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man enjoy its fruit. 7 And is there any man who has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man taker her.' 8 And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, 'Is there any man who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own.' 9 And when the officers have finished speaking to the people, them commanders shall be appointed at the head of the people.

 

이 구절은 참으로 묘합니다. 새집을 지어놓고 살아보지 못하고 전쟁을 가는 것도 억울하고 포도 농사를 짓고 수확하지 못한 사람 약혼하고 결혼식을 못 올린 사람 그리고 두려워서 마음이 약한 사람은 전쟁에 참여하지 말라는 건데요. 이건 마치 정신이 딴 데 팔려있고 자기 생활도 못 누리는데 전쟁은 무슨 전쟁이냐 너의 삶부터 챙기란 의미로 읽힙니다. 하지만 어찌 보면 마치 특별한 계층에게만 부여되는 특권 같기도 합니다. 현대 한국 사회도 특권 계층이나 온갖 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 군 면제를 받은 사례를 보면서 특권층의 안전보장처럼 느껴지더라고요. 성경은 항상 공동체의 정의와 공평을 말하지만 그러한 가운데 철저한 계급사회처럼 보입니다.

평화 제안은 개뿔

 

10 " When you draw near to a city to fight against it, offer terms of peace to it. 11 And if it responds to you peaceably and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labour for you and shall serve you. 12 But if it makes no peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it. 13 And when the Lord your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword, 14 but the women and the little ones, the livestock, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you. 15 Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not cities of the nations here.

 

10절에서 15절도 참으로 위선적이라고 느껴집니다. 전쟁 침량 국가가 먼저 평화를 제안하는데 조건이 우리의 종이 되어라는 것입니다. 그런데 입장바꾸어서 지들은 그렇게 하지 않을 거잖아요. 당연히 쉽게 수락하지 않겠죠. 그저 명분 쌓기 용인 거죠. 상대측에서 거절하면 남자는 다 죽이고 여자와 아이들은 노획물로 삼으라는데요. 참으로 잔인합니다. 자기들은 노예 생활 탈출해 놓고선 다른 민족은 노예로 삼으려고 하다니요. 하나님의 이름으로 전쟁까지 치르고 폭력적인 행태를 보면 도저히 공감이 안 갑니다. 오로지 자기 민족의 이익을 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 것 같습니다.

호흡있는 자는 절멸

 

16 But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes, 17 but you shall devote them to complete destruction, the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded, 18 that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices that they have done for their gods, and so you sin against the Lord your God.

 

호흡 있는 자는 모조리 절멸이라니 참으로 끔찍하지 않습니까? 히타이트 아모리 족속 등 다른 민족들을 모조리 척살하라는데 이는 이들이 하나님께 죄를 저지를까 염려되어서라고 합니다. 기가 막힙니다. 지들이 저지른 잔학 무도한 짓은 생각도 안 하고 저희들 다칠까 봐 걱정하는 집단 이기주의 어쩔 거야.

사람보다 나무가 더 소중하다

 

19 "When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them. You may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down. Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you? 20 Only the trees that you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siege works against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.

 

그리고 19절은 자원이 될 수 있는 나무 등은 함부로 베지 말라고 합니다. 사람은 당장 위협이 되니 마구잡이로 없애도 되고 나무한테는, 나무가 무슨 죄가 있느냐, 나무가 너를 공격하는 것도 아닌데 굳이 베어버릴 필요가 있느냐며 두라고 합니다. 이는 정복 후 관리와 경제적 지속 가능성을 염두에 두고 한 말이겠죠. 전쟁의 명분은 억지로 세우고 신의 이름으로 포장한 전쟁 매뉴얼이 따로 없네요.
