개구리 떼와 모기 파리떼 등장의 두 번째 재앙(출애굽기 8장)

출애굽기 8장은 하나님의 두 번째 재앙 미션 수행입니다. 먼저 개구리를 출몰하게 하고 모기보다 조금 큰 각다귀 등장인데 한국식 이는 아닌 것 같습니다. 그리고 파리떼마저 출몰하며 강물이 상당히 오염되었음을 암시하는 것 같은데요. 이러한 재앙에도 불구하고 파라오는 그때그때 위기만 모면할 뿐 좀처럼 이스라엘 민족을 돌려줄 생각이 없어 보입니다.

하나님의 두 번째 재앙

출애굽기 7장에 지팡이를 뱀으로 만들고 나일강을 피로 물들게 한 데 이어 두 번째 재앙이 시작됩니다. 

 

재앙의 시작 출애굽기 7장 읽기

 

1. Then the LORD said to Moses, " Go in to Pharaoh and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, " Let my people go, that they may serve me.

2. But if your refuse to let them go, behold, I will plague all your country with frogs.

3. The Nile shall swarm with frogs that shall come up into your house and into your bedroom and on your bed and into the houses of your servants and your peope, and into your ovens and your kneading bowls.

4. The frogs shall come up on you and on your people and on all your servants."''

5. And the LORD said to Moses, " Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the canals and over the pools, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt!'"

6. So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt, 

7. But the magicians did the same by their secret arts and made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.

 

 

 

두 번째 재앙은 나일강에 개구리떼들이 몰려들어 집안까지 침 입해 아수라장을 만들어 놓는다고 합니다. 하나님의 기적 같지만 역사적 사실을 보면 나일강의 적조 현상 등으로 인해 당시 개구리 떼가 침몰한 적이 있다고 하더군요. 마치 선덕여왕의 미실이 만세력을 손에 쥐고 있어서 기후를 예측해 대중에게 공포감을 조성한 에피소드가 생각이 나는데요.

 

어쨌거나 그런 상황을 예측하고 지령을 내린 것만으로도 하나님은 확실히 남다른 능력의 보유자는 맞는 것 같습니다. 게다가 좀 황당한 것은 당시는 무슨 마법의 시대가 공존했었나 봐요. 모세의 지팡이가 뱀으로 변한 것을 보고 따라한 마술사도 나오더니만, 이번에도 개구리로 변하게 하는 마술사들이 출몰하네요. 대체 뭔 재주를 지닌 것인지 이들의 정체는 무엇인지 알다가도 모르겠습니다.

개구리 출몰에 파라오의 간청

 

 

8.Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, "Plead with the LORD to take away the frogs from me and from my people, and I will let the people go to sacrifice to the LORD."

9.Moses said to Pharaoh, "Be pleased to command me when I am to plead for you and for you and for your servants and for your people, that the frogs be cut off from you and your houses and be left only in the Nile."

10. And he said, "Tomorrow." Moses said, "Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God.

11. The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your servants and your people. They shall be left only in the Lile."

12. So Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD about the frogs, as he had agreed with Pharaoh.

13. And the LORD did according to the word of Moses. The frogs died out in the houses, the countyards, and the fields.

14. And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank.

15. But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.

 

 

 

 

요술사들과 하나님의 기적이 합쳐서 개구리떼가 난리도 아니니 파라오가 다급한 마음에 모세에게 다가가 제발 원하는 대로 해주겠으니 개구리 떼를 없애 달라고 합니다. 그래서 일단 파라오 말대로 개구리 떼를 없애고 났더니만 파라오는 이내 정색을 하고 말을 들어주지 않습니다. 이 역시도 하나님과 모세 그리고 아론이 예상했던 사실이고요.

티끌을 모기로 만들다

 

16. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats in all the land of Egypt.'"

17. And they did so. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats in all the land of Egypt.

18. The magicians tried by their secret arts to produce gnats, but they could not. So there were gnats on man and beast.

19. Then the magicians said to Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

 

 

그러자 하나님은 모세의 지팡이로 티끌을 모기로 만드는 기적을 행하십니다. gnat가 모기, 각다귀, 뭐 이런 단어라고 하는데요. 성경에는 이라고 나와 있습니다. 개인적으로는 나일강의 오염 현상으로 발생된 정황으로 보면 이보다는 모기가 맞는 것 같긴 합니다. 하여튼, 모기떼가 출몰하자 마법사들도 그것을 흉내 내지만 그렇게 안 되었다고 하네요. 왜 마술사들이 모기는 만들지 못한 것인지도 궁금합니다.

이번에는 파리떼

 

20. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Rise up early in the morning and present yourself to Pharaoh, as he goes out to the water, and say to him, 'Thus says the LORD, "Let my people go, that they may serve me. 

21. Or else, if you will not let my people go, behold, I will send swarms of fllies on you and your servants and your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be filled with swarms of fllies, and also the ground on which they stand.

22. But on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people dwell, so that no swarms of fllies shall be there, that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.

23. Thus I will put a division between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall happen.""

24. And the LORD did so. There came great swarms of fllies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants' houses. Throughout all the land of Egypt the land was ruined by the swarms of fllies.

 

 

전체적으로 오염된 강물로 인해 역병이 퍼지고 그로 인한 개구리부터 모기나 파리떼의 출몰 등으로 이집트 전역이 전염병에 걸리는 것을 예고하는 대목이 아닌가 싶습니다. 모기떼 출몰 이후 파리떼가 넘치게 하면서 이집트 왕을 협박했다고 합니다. 그리스 신화를 보면 아가멤논이 제사장의 딸을 겁탈하여 그 지역에 역병이 번지는 이야기가 나오잖아요? 그래서 아가멤논이 그 소녀를 풀어주자 역병이 사라진 것처럼 성경의 이 구절도 일면 비슷해 보입니다.

제사까지 지내라는 하나님

 

 

25. Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God within the land."

26. But Moses said, "It would not be right to do so, for the offerings we shall sacrifice to the LORD our God are an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice offerings abominable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?

27.We must go three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord  our God as he tells us."

28. So Pharaoh said, " I will let you go to sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you must not go very far away. Plead for me."

29. Then Moses said, "Behold, I am going out from you and I will plead with the LORD that the swarms of fllies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow, Only let not pharaoh cheat again by not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD."

30. So Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD.

31. And the LORD did as Moses asked, and removed the swarms of fllies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; not one remained.

32. But Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and did not let the people go.

 

일련의 공포 장치를 보여준 하나님은 애굽에서 자신을 기리는 제사를 올리라고 명령합니다. 그러자 모세가 말하길, 이집트인이 싫어하는 게 바로 그 제사 문화 때문인데 왜 자극하냐고 하지만 하나님의 뜻대로 그리 합니다. 좀 이해가 안 가는 구절이지만 뭔가 자신의 능력과 권위를 과시하려고 했던 것이 아닐까요? 아무튼, 온갖 자연재해에 파라오는 그때마다 알았다고 하더니 이번에도 수습이 되자 모르쇠로 일관합니다. 아무튼 이집트 왕은 매를 버네요.
