거인과 시혼 격파 내용이 나오는 신명기 2장 이야기

신명기 2장은 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 광야 생활 동안의 여정을 회고하며 그러한 와중에도 특정 세 가문, 에서와 모압, 암몬, 가문에게 피해를 주지 않을 것을 명합니다. 또한 가나안으로 가는 과정에서 전쟁을 허락하신 경우도 나오는데요. 영토 전쟁을 위해 계획이 철저해 보입니다.

에돔 ,모압, 암몬 가족은 건드리지 마라

1."Then we turned and journeyed into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea, as the Lord told me. And for many days we travelled round Mount Seir. 2 Then the LOrd said to me, 3 'You have been travelling around this mountain country long enough. Turn northwards and command the people, "You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers, the people of Ewau, who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful. 5 Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 You shall purchase food from them for money, that you may eat, and you shall also buy water of them for money, that you may drink. 7 For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He knows your going through this great wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you. You have lacked nothing."' 8 So we went on, away from our brothers, the people of Esau, who love in Seir, away from the Arabah road from Elath and Ezion-geber.

9 And the Lord said to me, 'Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar to the people of Lot for a possession.' 10(The Emin fornerly lived there, a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim. 11 Like the Anakim they are also counted as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim. 12 The Horites also lived in Seir formerly, but the people of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, as Israel did to the land of their possession, which the Lord gave the them.) 13 'Now rise up and go over the brook Zered. 14 And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered. 14 And the time from our leaving Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them. 15 For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.

 

 

신명기 2장 10절부터 흥미롭습니다. 옛날에 에밈 족속이 거주하였는데 안악, 그러니까 아나킴처럼 큰 거인족으로 그들도 르바임 족속으로 여김을 받았다고 합니다. 모압 사람들이 에밈이라고 부른 것이고요. 어찌 되었든 모압도 과거에 거인 민족인 에밈 족속을 몰아내고 땅을 차지한 거라고 합니다. 그리고 13절 제레드 혹은 세렛 시내를 건너가라고 명령한 것은 이스라엘 백성이 광야 생활을 끝내고 새로운 길로 나아간다는 의미입니다. 과거의 죄악에 해당하는 출애굽 1세대의 불순종 시대는 사라지고 새로운 세대가 가나안을 향해 나아가는 것이죠. 그렇게 가데스바네아에서 세렛 시내까지 건너는 데에 38년이 걸렸습니다. 출애굽 1세대는 가나안에 들어가지 못할 것이라고 명하신 대로 이들은 광야에서 멸망했습니다.

불순종의 시대를 지나서

 

16 "So as soon as all the men of war had perished and were dead from among the people, 17 the Lord said to me, 18'Today you are to cross the border of Moab at Ar. 19 And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.' 20(It is also counted as a land of Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there-but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim 21 a people great and many, and tall as the Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before the Ammonites, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 as he did for the people of Esau, who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them and they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day. 23 As for the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place.) 24'Rise up, set out on your journey and go over the Valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession, and contend with him in battle. 25 This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you on the peoples who are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of you and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you.'

 

그리하여 출애굽 1세대는 멸망하고 2세대에게 하나님은 은혜를 베푸시기로 합니다. 이는 순종하는 자들에게는 하나님이 새로운 기회를 주신다는 교훈을 준다고 하네요.

가나안 정복의 첫 단계

 

26"So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon the king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, 27'Let me pass through your land. I will go only by the road; I will turn aside neither to the right nor to the left. 28 You shall sell me food for money, that I may eat, and give me water for money, that I may drink. Only let me pass through on foot, 29 as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I go over the Jordan into the land that the Lord our God is giving to us.' 30 But Sihon the king of Hesbon would not let us pass by him, for the Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day. 31 And the LOrd said to me, 'Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, that you may occupy his land.' 32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33 And the Lord our God gave him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and all his people. 34 And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction every city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors. 35 Only the livestock we took as spoil for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities that we captured. 36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, as far as Gilead, there was not a city too high for us. The Lord our God gave all into our hands. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, that is, to all the banks of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, whatever the Lord our God had forbidden us.

 

이스라엘 백성이 요단강 동쪽에서 아모리왕 시혼과 전쟁을 벌이게 되는 과정의 연속입니다. 모세의 입을 통해 후일담을 하는 장으로 신명기는 거듭 계명을 강조하는 것인지 계몽을 내린 것인지는 알 길이 없습니다. 하지만 이 장에서 다루는 주요한 내용은, 악의 무리들과 전쟁 없이 통과만 해달라고 했건만 이것들이 저항해서 할 수없이 전쟁을 하게 되었다는 것으로 보입니다. 그러면서 이런 생각도 해봅니다. 만일 바산의 옥 왕이나 암몬의 시혼이 이스라엘 백성들을 그저 무사 통과하게 해 줬다면 전쟁이 일어나지 않았으려나요? 그랬을 것 같기도 하고 아니었을 것 같기도 합니다. 다만, 이들이 무사 통과하게 해 줬고 그럼에도 불구하고 전쟁이 일어났다면 하나님은 이스라엘 백성을 혼내고 상대국에게는 관대함을 보였을 것 같습니다. 하지만, 이 모든 것이 예견되었던 것이 하나님이 이집트의 파라오 마음을 강퍅하게 했던 것처럼 시혼에게도 강퍅한 마음을 갖게 했던 것입니다.

 

그렇게 시혼과의 전쟁은 하나님이 이스라엘에게 주신 첫 번째 가나안 정복 전쟁에서의 승리라고 합니다. 그리고 전쟁에서 승리한 자들답게 전리품을 가졌다고 합니다.
