해야할 것과 하지 말아야 할 것 신명기 14장

신명기 14장은 이스라엘 백성이 하나님의 거룩한 백성으로 어떻게 살아야 할지 구체적으로 설명합니다. 머리를 함부로 자르지 말 것과 정결한 음식을 먹을 것 그리고 십일조 규례 등 공동체 생활에 필요한 매우 합리적인 법규를 제정한 것 같습니다.

머리와 음식에 관하여

1. "You are the sons of the Lord your God. You shall not cut yourselves or make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead. 2 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

 

너희는 주의 아들들이다. 너희는 셀프 컷트를 하지 말 것이며 이마를 훤한 대머리로 만들지 말라고 합니다. 이게 무슨 날벼락같은 소리인가요? 그냥 함부로 머리를 자르지 말라는 것 같습니다.

 

 

 3. "You shall not eat any abomination. 4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep. 6 Every animal that parts the hoof and has the hoof cloven in two and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. 7 Yet of those that chew the cud or have the hoof cloven you shall not eat these: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger, the hoof, are unclean for you. 8 And the pig, the cud, is unclean for you. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. 

 

또한, 지난 번에는 아무거나 다 먹으라고 했던 것 같은데, 먹을 수 있는 음식과 먹어서는 안 되는 짐승이 구체적으로 언급되었습니다. 단순한 위생적 이유가 아니라 상징적인 행위로써 의미가 있다고 하는 내용입니다. 인상적 이게도 발굽이 두 개로 갈라지고 되새김질하는 것은 먹어도 된다고 하는데요. 이런 것을 생각하면 위생적인 이유가 맞는 것 같습니다. 그래서인지 돼지는 못 먹게 하였는데요. 돼지는 잡식성 동물로 더러운 음식 등을 막 먹기에 비위생적으로 여겼다고 합니다. 게다가 돼지는 기생충 감염에 취약하니 금지했던 것 같습니다. 물론 돼지는 발굽이 갈라졌지만 되새김질을 안 한 이유입니다. 그런 것도 있고 블레셋과 로마인은 돼지고기를 먹는 문화가 있었기에 이방 문화와 구별을 강조하기 위한 의도로 무시는 못할 것 같고요. 건조한 기후 지역에 살았기에 돼지 사육이 적합하지 않으니 그냥 먹지 말라고 한 이유도 있을 것 같습니다.

먹을 것과 먹지 말아야 할 것

 

9 "Of all that are in the waters you may eat these: whatever has fins and scales you may eat. 10 And whatever has fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you. 

 

 

 11. "You may eat all clean birds. 12 But these are the ones that you shall not eat: the eagle, the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 13 the kite, the falcon of any kind; 14 every raven of any kind; 15 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the seagull, the hawk of any kind; 16 the little owl and the short-eared owl, the barn owl 17 and the tawny owl, the carrion vulture and the cormorant, 18 the stork, the heron of any kind; the hoopoe and the bat. 19 And all winged insects are unclean for you; they shall not be eaten. 20 All clean winged things you may eat.

 

  21 "You shall not eat anything that has died naturally. You may give it to the sojourner who is within your towns, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God.

  "You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.

 

먹을 수 있는 것과 먹을 수 없는 것의 구분은 레위기 11장에 나와 있는 것을 다시금 상기시킨 것 같습니다. 21절은 특히 어미 젖에 새끼 염소를 삶지 말라고 하였는데요. 이는 고대 근동에서 행해졌던 이교도의 풍습과 관련이 있습니다. 일부 이방에서 풍요와 다산의 상징으로 이런 제사가 있었다는데요. 여호와는 이런 이교적 관습을 철저히 배격하였습니다. 이후 유대교의 코셔법에서도 이 구절이 근거가 되어서 고기와 유제품을 함께 먹지 않는 전통이 발전했다고 합니다.

음식을 대신해 현금을 바치라니

 

22. "You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. 23. And before the Lord your God, in the place tat he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine and of your oil, and the firstborn of your  herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always. 24 And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the Lord your God chooses, to set his name there, 25 then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the Lord your God chooses 26 and spend the money for whatever you desire oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. 27 And you shall not neglect the Levite who is within your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance with you. 

 

성경이라는 것은 읽을수록 회의적입니다. 뭔가 지속적인 공동체 생활을 강조하면서 복종하고 십일조 바치라는 것인데, 음식을 바치기 어려울 때, 그것도 운반상의 어려움이 있을 때 대신 현금으로 바치라고 하네요. 그런 와중에 약자를 돕는다고 십일조를 내라고 하는데요. 헌금도 십일조, 어려운 사람들 위해서도 십일조 그저 삥뜯기의 천재 같구만요.

28 "At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in the same year and lay it up within your towns. 29 And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your towns, shall come and eat and be filled, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do. 

 

 

그런 와중에도 레위인들의 특별 대접을 잊지 않았는데요. 여호와의 제사장직을 맡는다고 너무 오냐오냐하니 훗날 특권 의식과 권력 집중과 부패로 이어집니다. 왜 안 그러겠어요. 나약한 인간들이 그렇지요.
