안식년과 자비에 대한 율법을 다루고 있는 신명기 15장입니다. 이스라엘 백성에게 경제적 평등과 사회적 연대의 가치를 강조하며 하나님의 자비로운 성품을 강조한다고 하는데요. 부채의 면제를 비롯하여 가난한 자에 대한 자비 그리고 노예 해방 등에 관한 얘기가 등장합니다.
부채의 면제에 관한
1. "At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbour. He shall not exact it of his neighbour, his brother, because the Lord's release has been proclaimed. 3 Of a foreigner you may exact it, but whatever of yours is with your brother your hand shall release. 4 But there will be no poor among you: for the Lord will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess 5 if only you will strictly obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all this commandment that I command you today. 6 For the Lord your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.
안식년 제도가 인상적인데요. 매 7년째 되는 해에 모든 빚을 면제해 주어야 한다고 명령합니다. 그러니까 빚을 지고 7년만 버티면 면제해 준다는 건데요. 이는 가난한 자들이 영원히 가난에 구속되지 않도록 하나님의 자비를 실천하는 제도라고 합니다. 그러나 이러한 자비는 이스라엘 공동체 내에서만 적용되며 이방인 혹은 외국인에게는 적용되는 자비가 아닌 것 같습니다. 다음 구절을 보겠습니다.
빈부차가 신기할 정도
7. "If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. 9 Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart nad you say, 'The seventh year, the year of release is near', and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. 10 You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I COMMAND YOU, ' You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.'
여호와의 인도하심으로 공동체 생활을 하면서 모두가 공평하게 나눠갖고 평등하게 생활을 한 것으로 아는데 어떻게 빈부차가 있던 것인지 신기할 정도입니다. 고대 이스라엘 사회는 농업 중심의 공동체 사회였는데요. 특히 신명기는 모세가 회상 모드로 전달하는 것인데 여호수와 시대 얘기를 하고 있으니 말입니다. 아무튼, 여호수와 시대에 땅을 균등하게 분배하면서 빈부차가 생긴 것 같은데요. 신명기에서 모세가 이런 얘기를 하는 것은 일종의 오류 같기도 합니다.

노예 해방
12 "If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you, he shall serve you for six years, and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. 13 And when you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed. 14 You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your wine press. As the Lord your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; because he loves you and your household, since he is well off with you, 17 then you shall take an awl, and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your slave for ever. And to your female slave you shall do the same. 18 It shall not seem hard to you when you let him go free from you, for at half the cost of a hired servant he has served you for six years. So the Lord your God will bless you in all that you do.
여호와는 동족 히브리 사람이 자신의 가난으로 인해 종이 되었다면 7년째 되는 해는 자유롭게 풀어주라고 합니다. 그러면서 해방할 때는 빈손으로 보내지 말고 넉넉하게 줘서 보내라고 합니다. 자비를 실천하라는 것인데요. 그러면서도 종이 해방 후에도 주인과 함께 있길 원한다면 종의 귀를 뚫어 영원히 주인과 함께 살 수 있는 증표로 하라고 합니다. 이는 출애굽기 21장에도 나와있는 내용인데요. 갑자기 귀걸이가 하기 싫어지네요.
첫 새끼 바치기
19 "All the firstborn males that are born of your herd and flock you shall dedicate to the Lord your God. You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock. 20 You shall eat it, you and your household, before the Lord your God year by year at the place that the Lord will choose. 21 But if it has any blemish, if it is lame or blind or has any serious blemish whatever, 22 You shall eat it within your towns. The unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as though it were a gazelle or a deer. 23 Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.
그밖에 소나 양의 첫 새끼는 하나님께 바치라고 하비다. 이것은 하나님께서 주신 모든 것의 주권을 인정하는 상징적인 행위입니다. 그러면서 흠있는 짐승은 하나님께 바칠 수 없으며, 대신 집에서 먹을 수 있다고 합니다. 하나님께는 오로지 최상품만 바치라고 하네요.
