십계명에 관한 내용이 나오는 구절입니다. 지금 보면 지극히 상식적인 내용들일수 있지만 당시에는 문명인보다 미개인에 가까웠기에 꽤 신선하고 충격적인 내용들이었으리라 생각합니다. 하나님은 나 이외의 다른 신을 섬기지 말라 하고 금이나 은으로 우상을 제작하지 말라고 합니다. 그리고 하나님은 인간을 시험하러 왔다고 하셨습니다.
나 이외에 다른 신은 없다
1. And God spoke all these words, saying,
2. " I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of house of slavery,
3. " You shall have no other gods before me.
4. " You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
6. but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
출애굽기 20장, 하나님이 자신의 정체를 강조하고 이집트 노예에서 너희를 구출했다, 그러니 나 외에 다른 신은 없다며 강조하는 내용입니다. 그런데 가만 생각해 보면 이집트로 간 것도 요셉이 간청해서 식구들을 데리고 산 거잖아요? 그런데 느닷없이 핍박 코스프레에 구출된 것처럼 설명되고 있네요. 물론 이집트에서 처음에는 환대를 했겠지만 세대가 바뀌면서 인구는 늘어나고 골치 아픈 일이 많으니 구박을 받긴 했겠죠. 그래서 차별받고 서럽고 그랬던 것은 이해하는데 납치도 아니고 자기네가 제 발로 걸어 들어갔고 그때도 하나님이 허락한 거 아니었나요?
안식일을 지켜라
7. " You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
8. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy,
9. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,
10. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
11. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
그래서 하나님은 모세를 통해 율법을 계시합니다. 하나님 이름을 헛되이 하지 말라고 하면서 일단 안식일을 지키라고 합니다. sabbath day가 안식일인가 보네요. 그리고 6일을 일하고 하루는 쉬라고 합니다. 주 5일제 어쩔 거야. 하나님한테 혼나겠구먼.
법의 토대도 되는
12. " Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
13. "You shall not murder.
14. " You shall not commit adultery.
15. " You shall not steal.
16. " You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17. " You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's."
그 유명한 구절들이 나오네요. 살인하지 말고 간음하지 말고 남의 물건 훔치지 말고 이웃에게 거짓 증언을 하지 말라 하고요. 이렇게 하나님이 이런 목록을 만들어 법으로 만든 것을 보면, 없던 일을 만들어 정하신 게 아니라 당시 사람들이 이런 만행을 저질러서 골치가 아팠던 모양입니다. 그러니까 법으로 정했겠죠. 하나님이 인간을 로봇처럼, 하나님을 닮은 형상으로 만들었지만 이것들이 저절로 진화해서 아주 사악한 유전자를 물려주고 말았네요. 그래서 인간은 악하기에 교육받지 않고 교화되지 않으면 짐승과 다름 업다는 생각이 드네요.
하나님이 우리를 시험하러 오셨다
18. Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off
19. and said to Moses, " You speak to us, and we will listen ; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die."
20. Moses said to the people, " Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin."
21. The people stood far off, while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.
주기도문 외울 때 우리를 시험에 들지 말게 하소서가 나오잖아요. 그런데 하나님은 우리를 시험하러 오신 거라고 합니다. 두려워하지 말라고. 이게 어떻게 느껴지냐면, 시험이 아닌 실험하러 왔다는 소리로 들려요. 실험 대상이 된 것 같은 거죠. 외계 행성에서 인간을 시험하거나, 인간을 만든 창조주들이 지구에서 어떻게 적응하는지 시험하거나 실험하는 그런 기분? 믿음이 생겨야 하는데 공상이 무한 발동되네요.
우상숭배 금지
22. And the LORD to Moses, " Thus you shall say to the people of Israel: ' You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.
23. You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.
24. An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered I will come to you and bless you.
25. If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool on it you profane it.
26. And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.'
하나님이 금이나 은으로 된 신을 만들지 말라고 하는데요. 이것도 좀 의구심이 생깁니다. 물론 당시 각종 미신 등을 숭배하던 시절이라고는 해도 꼭 집어서 금이나 은으로 우상 제작을 하지 말라고 하는 걸 보면, 이들이 금과 은을 캐기 위해 지구에 온 게 아닌가 싶어요. 그러면서 양과 소를 바치라고 하잖아요? 그리고 제단 앞에서 알몸을 보이지 말라고 합니다. 뭔가 문명화된 삶을 살길 바라는 걸까요?
